AI helps Pathologists at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Center decrease the TAT for Cancer diagnosis

Problem Statement

Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Center (RGCIRC), a project of Indraprastha Cancer Society and Research Centre, a not-for-profit public society, is a medical facility and research institute based in Delhi, specialising in cancer treatment and research. It is one of the largest medical centers for cancer treatment in Asia. RGCIRC uses front-line technology that helps accurate identification of each patient’s unique cancer and planning of treatment for the best possible results. It is the first hospital in India to begin robotic surgery for cancer patients, the first hospital to install a true beam for precision radiotherapy and the first hospital to set up a molecular laboratory.

There is a critical shortage of pathologists, which is more pronounced in India. Cancer diagnosis being complex, takes 2-3 weeks for the test results. Even a routine test requires counting of individual cells and taking the ratio of positive (brown) to negative (blue) stained cells.

Although widely touted as a replacement for glass slides and microscopes in pathology, digital slides present major challenges in interoperability, data storage, security, transmission and processing. In the absence of a standardised data format, each vendor defines its own proprietary data formats, analysis tools, viewers and software libraries. This creates issues for interoperability.

Background

Digitization can help in automating repetitive & mundane tasks, thereby reducing the TAT of the pathologist to provide the correct diagnosis. Other advantages with the digitized workflow include the possibility for more active production planning, allowing staff and managers to keep track of how many specimens are there in the system and where in the production chain they are, whether time limits are being kept, etc. Digitized images also eliminate the need to go to the glass archive when looking for a previously prepared slide. In addition, while glass slides can be broken or lost, a digital image can easily be stored and transmitted.

Digitising images unlocks immense collaborative possibilities, as results can be reviewed by other specialists or research institutions in real time, worldwide, improving the time to diagnosis and prognosis. Combining this with AI solutions – facilitates even faster, and more accurate and consistent clinical decisions.

Healthcare Innovation Challenge (HIC), a flagship initiative of MeitY-NASSCOM Center of Excellence – IoT & AI, is aimed at enabling the Digital Transformation of Healthcare. Lying at the convergence of Healthcare, Technology and Impact creation, HIC is focused on increasing operational efficiency, reducing TAT & associated costs and enhancing patient engagement for Healthcare Providers through the adoption of curated Digital Technology solutions. HIC has a unique Use Case focused framework allowing comprehensive evaluation of Digital solutions through Jury Panels comprising Healthcare, Technology & Regulatory experts, to mitigate the risks associated with digital technology adoption. RGCIRC needed a solution that could help reduce the burden on their histopathologists, reduce the TAT for test results and improve the accuracy of diagnosis and therefore RGCIRC nominated this use case under HIC.

Solution Deployed

Qritive AI India Pvt Ltd, led by Dr Aneesh Sathe and Dr Rajasa Jiasaldani, the HIC winner, has an AI-based solution called Pantheon which is a CE marked vendor-agnostic digital pathology platform that enables digitization of the entire pathology lab workflow. It automates the analysis of Whole Slide Scanner images. It produces a rich diagnostic report and has the capabilities for workflow automation and telepathology. Pantheon has the following capabilities:

  • Computer Vision highlights problem areas and auto-detects visual indicators of disease (e.g. counting the total nuclei or classifying tumor tissue)
  • Natural Language Processing summarizes patient history for quick reading and analysis
  • Vendor agnostic whole slide image management system compatible with Hamamatsu, Philips, Leica, Huron and Morphle
  • Integration with major LIS, EMR and other hospital information systems as well as compatible with PACS systems and DICOM protocol
  • Data encryption & secure communication protocols

Qritive Pantheon

It has AI modules for Lymphoma, Prostate Cancer, Gastric Cancer, Colon Cancer, Breast Cancer and Alpha-thalassemia. The AI modules have 95% sensitivity and specificity based on 5,00,000 test images and 7000 hours of expert annotation.

Impact

Today, it takes weeks for a cancer patient to get lab results. Qritive AI’s solution reduces the TAT from a week to a day to produce a report for Prostate Cancer and improves accuracy of diagnosis. Pathologist has to largely focus on verifying the report generated by Pantheon.

Prostate Cancer

Mr J P Dwivedi, CIO, RGCIRC said, “Qritive has enabled our pathology to move towards becoming truly Digital. The tissue images captured onsite go to the cloud storage instantly. These images could be studied anywhere and anytime. Hospitals and labs are full of archives of slides. Just as the films have disappeared from Radiology, we envision the same for these slides in pathology. We have already established a tissue bank where tissues will remain stored. At the next level, these slides will all become digital. The next problem was storing, retrieving and sharing these digital slides. The solution took them all to the cloud where our pathologists can upload these images and share those as desired. The prostate Cancer Module powered by AI is helping to create a template for PDSS (Pathologist Decision Support System) and will segregate benign cases with a high degree of confidence straight saving a lot of time for pathologists. With data being available in real time, several opportunities for advanced analytics are opening up.

3D Menu Card: How Hoteliers Are Getting An Edge by Using AR Technology

In today’s age of high-end technology, it is important for every industry to keep innovating itself to meet the demands and expectations of consumers. There is a need for innovation in the food and hospitality industry as well. Typically, when you visit a restaurant, you have to go through a menu and then order the dishes you would like to eat. However, a physical menu, with all the dishes available at the restaurant listed on it, does not always prove to be the best guide.

Sometimes, you order a dish that you haven’t tried before and end up being disappointed by it as it doesn’t match your imagination of what you thought the dish would be like. In part because, when you read the name, or sometimes accompanied by a small description, of a dish on the menu, there is no way for you to know more about it. Asking the staff could help, but only to a certain extent.

To resolve these issues faced by the patrons visiting restaurants and hotels, three young entrepreneurs, Akshay Narayankar, Arnaw Gundawar and Shubham Sonawane, came up with an idea that was rooted in the world of new-age technology. These three entrepreneurs believed that a 3D menu card will not only make it easier for customers visiting a restaurant to order the right dishes but would also offer them a more immersive experience.

Talking about what led to the team come up with this idea, co-founder Akshay Narayankar, “While some people like to order tried-and-tested dishes when they go to a restaurant, there are many who wish to try something which they haven’t tasted before. However, in the pursuit of trying various kinds of food items or cuisines, they face several challenges. Before ordering a dish, they have no idea about, they would want to know several aspects pertaining to it like how it looks, the kind of ingredients used in it and whether it would appeal to their taste buds. A 3D menu card resolves all these issues by offering them a glimpse of high-quality food models represented in their original size, shape, and form.”

Many restaurants in India have already started using 3D menu cards. Apart from feeling good about the fact that have adopted themselves to modern technology, the owners and management of these restaurants have reported a positive jump in their sales figures. Clearly, their customers are very pleased with the introduction of 3D menu cards in these restaurants and are happy to see things being made convenient for them.

Elaborating further on this product, co-founder Arnaw Gundawar says, “Our product 3DMenu is created using world class technologies and provides an immersive experience enabled by Augmented Reality. For the longest time, restaurants have offered customers the option to go through physical menus. Since the last few years, some of the upmarket restaurants, cafeterias and eateries ditched physical menus for digital menus. A link to the digital menu would be shared by the customer on their smartphone, tablet or some other smart device and they would be ask to place an order after going through it. Unfortunately, apart from saving paper, these digital menus didn’t do much in the way of taking advantage of their digital platform.

“We should not create any innovation just for the heck of it. Good innovation is the kind that makes a real difference to the lives of people. A 3D menu is better than a physical menu in every possible way. When you pick up a physical menu, you only get to read the names of the dishes on the menu and sometimes, see a few pictures, and rarely do these pictures portay the reality of what the dish will be like. A 3D menu, on the other hand, is highly interactive. Using a 3D menu, customers will be able to view 3D models of dishes in AR and also have the opportunity to see the dishes from different angles. They can also share their feedback on the menu. Customers can also filter the menu based on their dietary restrictions and food preferences”, states co-founder Shubham Sonawane.

Though investing in a 3D menu card costs a bit of money initially, it proves to be a cost-effective product in the long run owing to reduced printing and distribution costs and the sales benefits that it can provide. Many restaurants, hotels, cafes and eateries of different kinds across India have already benefitted hugely by switching to 3D menu cards and many more are expected to follow soon in the near future. ADAS Emergency Braking Test Reveals Honda City Beats Much More Expensive Cars

  • The Honda City, followed by the Hyundai Ioniq 5, returned consistent results in the AEB test.
  • Mahindra’s XUV700 was the least predictable car in the AEB test.
  • The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 stopped in the shortest distance.

New Delhi: ADAS or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems are the latest leap in automotive technology, and carmakers are now integrating it into their cars across segments. To find out which manufacturer had the best system, autoX did a test comparing the Honda City, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Mahindra XUV700 and the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53. It was the Honda City, the least expensive car among the four, which came out on top in the AEB or Auto Emergency Braking Test.

AEB is the most crucial feature of ADAS as it automatically applies the brakes when it detects that a crash is imminent. All the cars in our test managed to come to a stop on their own, but it was the Honda City that came to a stop the farthest from the obstacle in place. While the Mahindra system has been around for some time now compared to the others and is thus not as updated as the others, it was surprising that the Honda City managed to comprehensively beat the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53.

The Honda City just didn’t stop the farthest from the human obstacle, but it was also the most composed of all the cars in the test. It detected the obstacle early and applied the brakes in the most progressive fashion out of all the others. The Ioniq 5 came in second in this regard, and the XUV700 and EQS 53 braked at the last second. However, while the XUV700 was inconsistent in its returns, the EQS 53 braked at the same marker each time, but it managed to brake later because of its huge brakes.

To give you a better idea of where things stand, here’s what autoX’s Road Test Editor Shivank Bhatt wrote in his verdict, “I would like to remind you that these ADAS systems aren’t built to a cost. A case in point is the City and its Honda Sensing tech. Even though it’s the most affordable ADAS-equipped car in the country, its assistance systems aren’t there for the heck of it. They work, and they work well. So, the next time someone like me tells you that ADAS is just a gimmick, don’t believe a word of it.”
