This transformative journey, led by Nachiket Joshi, Entrepreneur, Philanthropist & Convenor of Manthan, Seema Jagran Manch, the Campaign on Rejuvenation of Border Villages, witnessed a remarkable exchange of ideas, collaboration, and community engagement.

Commencing from Somnath, Gujarat, on December 19, 2024, the Yatra traversed through several key border villages across Gujarat and Rajasthan. The route included Somnath, Porbandar, Dwarka, Jamnagar, Mandvi, Lakhpat, Tharad, Kelnor, Karamwala, Kishangarh, Pokhran, Longewala, Nachana, amongst other places along the route and culminated in Hindu Malkot, Sri-Ganganagar, Rajasthan. The initiative focused on understanding the challenges and aspirations of these resilient communities while celebrating their cultural heritage and contributions to national pride.

The Yatra explored the lives of residents in coastal villages, observing traditional livelihoods such as fishing and understanding their deep-rooted connection to the sea. Participants were inspired by their resilience and the meticulous practices honed over generations, which reflect the spirit of coastal and border communities. The team visited schools, interacted with children to inspire and understand their aspirations, and stayed in homes within the villages, gaining first-hand insights into the daily lives of border residents. Communities were felicitated for their resilience and bravery in living on the first line of defence, highlighting their pivotal role in safeguarding the nation.

On December 25, the Yatra paid tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his birth anniversary in Sonu Gram Panchayat, Rajasthan. The event featured heartfelt remembrances of Vajpayee’s leadership and an inspiring dialogue with village leaders to chart a path for sustainable development, emphasizing education, healthcare, and grassroots empowerment.

Their insights and support underscored the critical importance of unity and collaboration in driving development and national pride.

The initiative garnered active participation from a diverse group, including NGOs such as Wey We Empower You Foundation, Prakruti Environmental Protection and Research Centre, and RC Dalal Trust. What is the Next Growth Story of BHARAT?

New Delhi [India], December 5: The Renewable sector has seen growth stories in Solar Energy, Wind Energy and Bio Ethanol. The next growth story in this sector is BIODIESEL.

The reason for the Biodiesel growth story is not far to seek.

BHARAT has made several commitments for Green House Gas reductions and has shown the World the way to ensure development and at the same time reduce Carbon emissions. Due to various pro-active actions taken, BHARAT is well on way to achieve Net Zero Emission status as per target due to the progress of Solar, Wind, Ethanol etc.

BIODIESEL is recognized world over as a very important tool to reduce emissions and fight global warming. The main reason is that Biodiesel is made from renewable sources and can be an import substitute in long run especially for developing Countries.

BHARAT had announced the National Policy on Biofuels in 2021 with an intent to contribute to National Energy Security, to mitigate Climate Change, to create new employment opportunities in sustainable manner

NPB thus has framed guidelines for promoting growth of few Renewables like, Ethanol, Biodiesel, Drop-in Fuels, Biogas. AS per the NPB, a blend of 20 % Ethanol and Biodiesel is required in petroleum-based Diesel.

For meeting the 20% blend, the demand for Biodiesel will be about 200 lakh Metric tonnes per year given the fact that BHARAT currently consumes about 1000 lakh Metric Tonnes of Petroleum Diesel.

Under this NPB, renewable fuels like Ethanol, Biogas, biomass etc have progressed greatly due to various incentives given by Government. It appears that focus is now shifted to BIODIESEL to further reduce Carbon emissions at accelerated pace and meet the goals of NPB.

BIODIESEL has to be blended into normal diesel by the Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (PSU OMC) including Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum. Accordingly, the PSU OMC have jointly announced Tenders for purchase of Biodiesel to implement the Biodiesel Blending Program. The Tender is for purchasing Biodiesel at a fixed price.

As per conditions of this Tender, the approved Biodiesel manufacturer has to only offer the quantities that it wishes to supply based on its installed capacities. Since the price is already fixed, it is a great win-win situation for both, the Manufacturer and the OMC’s. Entire production capacities of the manufacturers can be sold to public sector OMC’s. This is unprecedented situation for any Sector.

To deter sale of unblended diesel in the Country, the Government has announced an additional levy of Rs 2 per litre of unblended Diesel with effect from 1st April 2025. This means that all OMC’s will have to pay additional Rs 2 per litre as a penalty if they sell Diesel in the Country without blending with Biodiesel.

This is another big, indirect, additional boost to the Biodiesel Industry.

The OMCs who require high quality Biodiesel have visited every Biodiesel manufacturer facility across the Country to ascertain about the technical capability of the manufacturer. The OMCs have enrolled only the manufacturers who can supply good quality of Biodiesel and only such Biodiesel manufacturers as are technically certified by the OMCs are allowed to participate in the Tender.

Currently, there are only 36 manufacturers in the whole Country that are approved by the PSU OMCs as being technically certified to supply Biodiesel to the OMCs under the Biodiesel Blending programme. And their total installed manufacturing capacity is only 12 lakh Metric tonnes per year against the requirement of 200 lakh Metric Tonnes.

There is thus a huge gap in supplies of 188 lakh Metric Tonnes which has to be filled in by 2030. It is seen that Biodiesel manufacturing capacities will have to increase manifold to meet this humungous demand and there will be a huge capacity expansion in Biodiesel sector. Thus, not only are the sales of existing approved Biodiesel manufacturers to OMCs assured, their expanded capacities are also taken care of.

By using 200 lakh Metric Tonnes of Biodiesel, there will be a reduction in Carbon Dioxide emissions by about 400 lakh Metric Tonnes every year. This emissions reduction will assist the Country phenomenally in achieving its “Net zero” status.

Implementation of NPB guidelines for Biodiesel will result into further great direct and indirect benefits like rural employment, carbon sequester, land development etc.

With the thrust now placed by the Government on Biodiesel blending, this sector is bound to boom exponentially.

Important players in Biodiesel sector include Emami Limited, Kalesuwari Refineries, Monopoly Innovations, Universal, Biomax , BioD Energy to name a few with two listed entities in this sector which are Kotyark Industries Limited which trades at 990 per share and Rajputana Biofuels Limited which IPO got recently oversubscribed 730 times and trades at 260 per share.

Mobius Foundation and Environment Law & Development Foundation host impactful panel on climate liability and justice

New Delhi [India], October 1: The Mobius Foundation, in collaboration with the Environment Law & Development Foundation, successfully convened a significant panel discussion titled “Climate Liability, Justice, and Jurisprudence” on September 27, 2024, at Travancore House, New Delhi. The event addressed the urgent need for accountability and robust legal frameworks in response to escalating climate crises worldwide.

The esteemed panel featured prominent speakers, including:

  • HMJ Hima Kohli, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India (Chief Guest).
  • Dr Afroz Ahmad, Expert Member, National Green Tribunal (Guest of Honour).
  • Chandra Bhushan, President & CEO, International Forum for Environment, Sustainability and Technology (Special Guest).
  • Sanjay Upadhyay, Senior Advocate and Honorary Managing Trustee, ELD Foundation.
  • Praveen Garg, IAS (Retd.), Former Special Secretary, MoEF&CC and President, Mobius Foundation.

The panel was expertly moderated by Jatinder Jay Cheema, a Projects, Energy, and Natural Resources lawyer.

Key Discussion Highlights:

The panel critically examined the intersections of climate change liability and legal frameworks, focusing on the following key themes:

1. Climate Liability: Exploring accountability mechanisms for governments, NGOs, corporations, and individuals in the Indian context.

2. Climate Justice: Discussing the disproportionate impacts of climate change on vulnerable and marginalized communities.

3. Evolving Jurisprudence: Reviewing landmark cases and innovative judicial approaches in climate litigation within the Indian legal system.

Speaker Insights:

HMJ Hima Kohli emphasized the urgency of addressing climate change, stating, “The increasing frequency of extreme weather events, melting glaciers, rising sea levels, and the loss of biodiversity underscore the crisis we face. It is imperative that we, as a society, recognize the multifaceted nature of this challenge. The solutions must integrate legal and political frameworks alongside scientific advancements, ensuring that every stakeholder is held accountable for their role in combating climate change.”

Dr Afroz Ahmad highlighted the staggering impact of fly ash, stating, “Globally, around 800 million tons of fly ash are generated, with India contributing approximately 180 million tons. This not only poses environmental hazards but also highlights the pressing need for stringent regulatory measures and innovative solutions. We must focus on sustainable practices that not only mitigate this waste but also harness its potential in a manner that benefits society.”

Chandra Bhushan stressed the need to navigate the complex relationship between environmental conservation and community displacement. He remarked, “The pursuit of sustainability often leads to conflicts, particularly for marginalized communities. We must recognize that our environmental policies must be inclusive, addressing the rights and needs of those who are most affected. True sustainability requires a holistic approach that balances ecological preservation with social justice.”

Sanjay Upadhyay called for the integration of climate liability into Indian law, advocating for a comprehensive legal framework grounded in sound principles. He stated, “We need to approach climate liability with a sense of urgency and responsibility. It is crucial that our legal frameworks reflect the realities of climate change, ensuring justice for those affected. An overarching law is essential, and it must be informed by both legal expertise and practical considerations, ensuring that we are prepared for future challenges.”

Praveen Garg said, we should strive to build a future wherein no community bears a disproportionate burden of the climate crisis, the future where the dignity and rights of all people are protected and where we live in harmony with ecosystems which sustain us.

The approach should be to have an overarching but well-thought-out law on climate change. There is a need to shift of population that is sitting on small agricultural land holdings, which can be brought about by quality education and skill development in emerging sectors.

In conclusion, the Mobius Foundation and the Environment Law & Development Foundation invited all stakeholders to continue engaging in discussions around climate liability and justice, emphasizing the importance of youth involvement in this critical dialogue.

IMF Reaches Staff-Level Agreement with Argentina to Unlock $7.5 Billion Amid Ongoing Economic Crisis

Buenos Aires, Argentina: In a significant development, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reached a staff-level agreement with Argentina, unlocking a much-needed $7.5 billion loan to aid the country in the midst of its persistent economic crisis. The agreement, which comes after prolonged negotiations, signals a potential path to alleviate Argentina’s financial woes and stabilize its economy.

The South American nation has been grappling with a deep economic recession since 2018, coupled with soaring inflation rates and a mounting debt burden. The IMF loan is seen as a crucial lifeline that can provide some relief to the struggling Argentine economy, although it comes with certain conditions.

As part of the staff-level agreement, Argentina is expected to implement a series of structural reforms aimed at promoting fiscal responsibility, bolstering its financial sector, and fostering sustainable economic growth. The country’s commitment to these reforms is seen as a prerequisite for receiving the financial assistance and restoring investor confidence.

The IMF’s decision to approve the $7.5 billion loan is based on the progress Argentina has made in its negotiations and reform efforts, which were closely monitored by the international financial institution’s staff. However, it is important to note that the agreement still needs to be approved by the IMF’s executive board, which is expected to deliberate on the matter in the coming weeks.

The loan disbursement could offer some respite to the Argentine government as it grapples with various economic challenges, including rising poverty levels and a fragile currency. The country’s leaders have been striving to strike a balance between implementing necessary reforms and managing the social impact of austerity measures.

Moreover, the IMF staff-level agreement is not only aimed at providing short-term financial assistance but also seeks to address underlying structural issues in Argentina’s economy. These reforms aim to enhance the nation’s long-term economic prospects, encouraging sustainable growth and stability.

While the IMF loan brings some hope for Argentina’s economic recovery, there are still considerable challenges ahead. The successful implementation of reforms, coupled with external factors such as global economic trends and commodity prices, will play a pivotal role in determining the nation’s trajectory.

As Argentina moves forward with the proposed reforms and awaits the final approval of the IMF’s executive board, the international community will be closely monitoring the country’s progress. A stable and prosperous Argentina is not only crucial for the well-being of its citizens but also has broader implications for the stability of the region and the global economy.

In conclusion, the staff-level agreement between Argentina and the IMF to unlock the $7.5 billion loan represents a critical step forward in the country’s ongoing efforts to overcome its economic challenges. The implementation of the agreed-upon reforms and the prudent management of the loan proceeds will be paramount in ensuring sustainable growth and a brighter economic future for Argentina.

The evolution of the Indian economy in 2022-2023 according to Mandhir Singh Todd

In an economic context that has been globally complex, where many countries have experienced record inflationary numbers, India not only manages to avoid the prolonged inflationary scenario, but also, according to studies, it is on its way to becoming the economy of fastest growing in the world, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Mandhir Singh Todd explains everything about the current economic situation in India and its projections for 2023.

India and a recovering economy, according to Mandhir Singh Todd

According Mikey Todd, although it is inevitable that the geopolitical tensions caused by the war in Ukraine will affect the Indian economy in the way they are doing worldwide. The country is also experiencing a context of reactivation of economic growth, to which is added the excellent planting season to increase the expectations that rural demand and urban spending will be able to equalize. Regarding inflation, which is the data generating concern throughout the planet, in India, it has come to exceed 7%. Regarding this data, the RBI has maintained that the worst is over. However, they argued that it is necessary to maintain moderation in the prices of raw materials over time, as well as a relief in the supply chain, in order to avoid a greater problem in inflation.

The role of oil

Mandhir Singh Todd explains that another of the interesting facts that the RBI has sustained is related to the high prices of crude oil, India being one of the main producing countries of this in the world. Considering its impact on the country’s current account deficit, it will widen to 2.3% in total in 2022 that provides the assumption that the oil price reaches $105 per barrel be met.

IMF projections for India and the world

Recently, explains Mandhir Singh Todd, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has cut its economic growth forecast for India for fiscal year 23, by 0.6 percentage points, placing it at a maximum of 6.8%. This is in a context in which both the IMF and other international financial agencies ensure that the global economic crisis has not yet reached its worst moment.

In this sense, Mikey Todd says that the IMF had forecast a 7.4% GDP growth for India in July 2022 in the fiscal year beginning in April 2022. However, that projection was lower than that established in January 2022. The same year, which was 8.2%. In FY21-22, India achieved growth of 8.7%, especially related to the low base effect caused by the coronavirus pandemic lockdown in FY20-21.

Now, in the annual World Economic Outlook report, released in October, the IMF said the outlook for India in FY22 is 6.8%, reflecting a weaker-than-expected result in the second quarter, as well as lower external demand. These data given in a context in which global economic projections reflect considerable slowdowns for large economies. An example is a contraction of GDP in the United States during the first half of 2022, as well as a contraction of the Eurozone in the second half and the closures in China due to the prolonged outbreaks of Covid-19 that led to a crisis in the real estate sector in that country.
