Anjali Kumari’s dance moves go viral in the romantic song “Bheege Bheege Jism”

Small-town girl Anjali Kumari was the talk of the town with her bold avatar in the romantic song “Katra Katra Again” by singer Shahid Mallya. The video gained 2,500,000 hits on P J Music Label’s YouTube channel in a few months. Claiming success, the entire cast and crew are back with another sizzling romantic song titled “Bheege Bheege Jism.”

Anjali Kumari has delighted her fans again with her hot and bold dance moves with co-artist Raghav Vohra. The two can be seen sharing chemistry in this beautiful romantic song sung by popular singers Raja Hasan and Khushboo Jain. The music and lyrics are composed by KR Wahi aka Karan Wahi. Kunal Jena is the cinematographer whereas Choreographer Aamir Shaikh has created some amazing moves that are sure to go viral on social media.

New Hindi Movie ‘Aankda’ is a dark comedy story in the conceptual Muftpur village of UP. The movie is based on the habits of the villagers to get free electricity by connecting a wire fraudulently to the overhead cables by a bamboo stick called KATIYA. Government officers are taking every care to stop this practice. Dark Comedy of fraudulent villagers with UP-style item songs, and a typical Pradhanji-making politics are the main attractions of the movie

Few good people like a school teacher and some young boys and girls oppose this KATIYA practice. Sajjan is the right hand of Pradhanji, while Jagan and others are criminals in the village. Pradhanji of the village is glorifying the KATIYA by making it a GODDESS by building a temple and worship it. The Arti of Goddess Katiya is a nice comedy song. Coincidently Pradhan’s charming daughter is also named as Katiya. Katiya tries to flirt Sanju. Sanju, a sincere student gets selected in UPSC for IAS and the fight against Pradhanji and KATIYA practice becomes easy.

Sarah L-ee was born on the 11th of September 1995, in Canada. She is a mix of Japanese and Korean.

She has aimed to be a singer since she was a child. She started to perform at the age of 17 mainly on the internet.

Sarah L-ee speaks English, Japanese, and Korean fluently. She writes lyrics and composes the music and sings the song. She has been expressing her unique style freely through her songs.

“I Want To Be A Part Of Meaningful Films That Leave A Positive Impact On The Society”, Says Undertaker Actress Vanshika Gupta

Making a place for yourself in an industry, where mostly actors who come from a lineage get good opportunities, is quite difficult. However, Vanshika Gupta had decided that if there was anything she would do in her life, it would be acting. Born and raised in Shimla, Vanshika realized her calling for acting very early in life and started doing theatre from a very young age. She made her screen debut with the much-acclaimed feature film ‘Undertaker’ directed by director Vinod Pande.

In this interview, the talented actress talks about her journey as an artist, journey from Shimla to Mumbai, passion for acting, upcoming projects, and more.

You made your acting debut last year with the critically acclaimed film ‘Undertaker’. You received accolades for your performance both from the critics and the audience. How has life been for you after its release?

‘Undertaker’ gave me a lot of recognition as an actress. I remember a senior journalist telling me that even though it was my first film, I looked like a seasoned performer in it. Though most actresses prefer making their debut with a commercial film and dream of playing glamorous roles, I am glad I got the opportunity to work in a film that gave me the opportunity to prove my mettle as an actress. I learned a lot working with Vinod Pande who has several incredible films including ‘Sins’ (2005) that was distributed by Yash Raj Films.

Which was the biggest challenge involved in playing this particular character from ‘Undertaker’?

The character that I played in the film had a lot of emotional depth to it. I read the script multiple times to have a thorough understanding of what the character was feeling and trying to convey. I rehearsed each and every scene multiple times and worked very hard on the dialogues as well. The workshops we did before the film helped me get into the skin of my character.

When did you realize that you wanted to pursue acting as a profession?

I discovered my love from acting at a very young age. I used to love watching films as a child. I guess that’s when I first got attracted to this medium. While I was a good student, I ensured that I make enough time to do theatre and hone my skills as an actress. I graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from City Evening College Shimla. While I was in Shimla, I participated in numerous plays that went on to become very popular.

Which has been your most memorable stage performance?

I started my acting career with Gaiety Theatre in Shimla. The first play I acted in was called ‘Jeevan Dhara’. The play was received very well and I got a lot of appreciation for my performance in it. Some of the other notable plays I acted in were My Picture, Dr.Fostess, and Baaki Itihaas.

Apart from acting, is there something else you are passionate about?

I love to write poetry in Hindi. I feel being a writer has contributed to my growth as an artist. I want to keep exploring myself as a writer. Someday, I might write a script on my own.

After ‘Undertaker’, I have been getting a lot of offers. One of the projects that I had signed last year got delayed because of the Covid-19 situation. I have signed a very important project but I will let the makers announce it at the right time. I want to be a part of meaningful films that leave a positive impact on the society.

Dancing a fine line: women in Bollywood

The position of female performers in Bollywood films’ big dance numbers is the focus of new research at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Bollywood is a multi-million-dollar industry with huge cultural influence and popularity worldwide. Dr. Kooshna Gupta, Faculty of Arts, examined how the dance item in these movies became big business.

The ‘item dance’, one of the main musical numbers of the film usually performed by a female dancer, has become increasingly important for a film’s success. The role has changed over time, says Kooshna whose research covers films from 1988 to 2015.

She examined the characters played by female performers, focusing on the type of dance that is not related to the narrative but is more of an erotic display of women – just there for entertainment purposes. In other words, If you removed the song, the film would still make sense.

She found that the traditional item song, from as far back as the 1950s, used to be performed by actresses who were often newcomers rather than established performers. They were never the heroine of the film, but rather the ‘vamp’ who could be seen drinking, smoking and being openly sexual in ways the heroine couldn’t.

“Because it wasn’t seen as acceptable in Indian society for the heroine to dance or be presented in such a provocative way in a public space,” she says.

These actresses could become an instant success, so the item song was seen as a gateway to popularity. There were some movies which would have been a big flop, but the item song saved the film which of course gave these female performers some power.

This started the process of film companies spending serious money on the production of that one song because selling the rights to TV channels represented around 50 percent of their profits.

Leading actresses, known for their other more ‘serious’ work like Priyanka Chopra, starting to perform these songs, which in turn increased the film’s budget, as they had to be paid more.

Add to that the cost of hundreds of people working behind the scenes – as musical directors, composers, choreographers, dancers, set designers, wardrobe, special effects and lighting – and the item song has become very big business.

Kooshna says there’s long been a paradox between the agency of the item dance performer and her power to earn money and fame, and the way she is achieving it; by performing in hyper-sexualised dances that objectify her for a largely male audience and create an unrealistic image of the ‘perfect woman’.

“We’re always going to have this tension between agency and subjectivity, but if you look at actresses in Bollywood, they have gained something; it’s a space, one place, where they are dominating, making a lot of money and becoming famous.”

However, with increasing attention to rape and violence against women in India and the Nirbhaya case in 2012, several feminist movements and humanitarian organisations pushed for a ban on item songs.

As a result, Kooshna says the censor did at one point ban the songs from TV, but you still have YouTube channels playing 24 hours a day.

However, the fact that these performers are now considered professionals, like any other professional, is progress, she believes.

“So, you can be in a serious film or a Bollywood film and cross genres as a female performer in India now. There’s a kind of flexibility to switch roles, from being a heroine to an ‘item girl’. I think that’s a positive thing.”

This is Kooshna’s second PhD. She first combined her interest in linguistics and the Indian socio-cultural context by focusing on code-mixing in Bollywood films (2009-2014). Code-mixing is a linguistic term that refers to the use of more than one language, in this case Hindi and English, in the course of a single conversation or written text.

Talking about the process of shooting the music video, director Navjit Buttar says, “We worked very hard to create some interesting visuals for the song. When I heard ‘Ho Gaya Hai Pyaar’, I instantly fell in love with it. I wanted to shoot a video that would complement the melody and the lyrics of the song. The beauty of the song and the video is its simplicity which will strike a chord with the audience instantly.”

He is known for having an eye for visual aesthetics and has collaborated with some of the most prominent names in the film and music industry like Darshan Raval, Diljit Dosanjh, Neha Kakkar, Vishal Mishra, Tulsi Kumar, Papon, Jassie Gill, and Ammy Virk among other.

“Since people watch music videos from all across the world today, with each video one has to offer them the kind of visuals they have never seen before. Apart from ensuring the visuals are good, I also make sure that the video has a story that will connect with the audience. I believe every song tells a story and I try to capture it in the form of visuals. Working on ‘Ho Gaya Hai Pyaar’ was a wonderful experience as all the artists put their best foot forward”, he says.

Directed by Navjit Buttar and featuring Arjun Bijlani and Surbhi Chandna, the teaser of ‘Ho Gaya Hai Pyaar’ is all set to release on DRJ Records’ official YouTube channel on July 13. Prior to this song, Navjit had collaborated with DRJ Records on three other original singles which went on to become smash hits.
