Shah Rukh Khan La Trobe University PhD Scholarship of $225,000 (AUD), awarded to New Delhi Student

New Delhi [India]: The second prestigious Shah Rukh Khan La Trobe University PhD Scholarship was today presented to a New Delhi student with a passion to improve health outcomes for vulnerable communities, to study in Australia.

During a Gala Dinner in Delhi, La Trobe University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Theo Farrell presented Sumaira Khan with the 2024 Shah Rukh Khan La Trobe University PhD Scholarship, valued at more than $225,000 (AUD).

Sumaira was selected from a competitive field of applicants from across India for the four-year scholarship, which recognises the humanitarian and social justice achievements of Shah Rukh Khan (SRK). The PhD scholarship was made possible through La Trobe’s long-standing partnership with the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.

Designed to support aspiring female Indian researchers who want to make a meaningful impact in the world, the scholarship enables Sumaira to undertake research at La Trobe’s state-of-the-art facilities in Melbourne, Australia.

Sumaira will work with medical anthropologists Dr Tarryn Phillips and Dr Catherine Trundle to identify ways to improve healthcare for South Asian migrant women in Australia with an elevated risk of Type 2 diabetes. The study seeks to understand the factors that shape and constrain the ability to practice self-care, and inform improved healthcare design, access and equity for healthcare programs in Australia and India.

“I’m very grateful to receive the Shah Rukh Khan scholarship. It’s life-changing for me and my family, and I’m excited to interact with La Trobe’s global community of researchers. It really is my proudest achievement,” Sumaira said.

Shah Rukh Khan said he was delighted to support the development of Indian women to pursue solutions to challenges affecting not just Indian communities, but global issues.

“Sumaira’s passion to improve health outcomes for vulnerable communities is inspiring, and her journey is a wonderful lesson to other Indian women who want to improve lives through scientific study,” Mr Khan said.

Sumaira’s passion for public health grew from her own family’s experiences accessing care for her younger brother when he was diagnosed with severe autism.

In 2022, Sumaira graduated with a Master of Public Health from Mumbai’s Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), where she received the academic prize for best first year student for achieving the highest grades in her cohort.

She has since completed an internship with Save the Children and Sangath, investigated women’s experiences of open defecation in Delhi and explored the research area of early childhood development in India. Sumaira has also worked with a social development research organization in India exploring the domains of primary health care system strengthening and vaccine hesitancy.

“I’m amazed that I have this opportunity to do research in Australia, I hope my story can connect with young girls across India, to inspire them to achieve more, to believe that it’s possible for young women to follow their dreams,” she said.

The first recipient of the Shah Rukh Khan La Trobe University PhD Scholarship, Gopika Kottantharayil Bhasi, has completed the first year of her PhD into a field-deployable diagnostic test for honeybee viruses, and with the aim of developing therapies to aid honeybee health.

La Trobe was the first Australian university to award Shah Rukh Khan with an Honorary Degree, Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) during a ceremony at the University’s Melbourne campus in 2019. Manipur Education Department Embraces Blockchain Technology on ICP

The solution will ensure the certificate’s authenticity while making it accessible to the owners anywhere in the world at all times, removing the issues associated with lost certificates. This ICP-based solution will bring more credibility to certificates and empower students in their search for employment.

The product suite will leverage ICP technology, such as Internet Identity, to ensure all relevant information is accessible and tamperproof while no unnecessary personal information is available. The Horizon, a New Delhi web3 policy and adoption think tank, will support the implementation process with technology guidance from DFINITY.

Internet Identity is a privacy-preserving authentication solution developed by the DFINITY Foundation. Internet Identity allows users to authenticate their identity credentials without disclosing personal information using advanced cryptography.

This latest initiative strengthens ICP’s presence in the region alongside the ICP. India Hub, which has organized hundreds of hackathons and workshops in India. ICP is committed to fostering a collaborative ecosystem in Asia, as demonstrated by the launch of the ICP Asia Alliance and a $20 million grant available for the projects in the region.

From Slums to Success: Pehchaan The Street School Redefines Education in Delhi

In the heart of Anna Nagar slums, nestled amidst the challenges of crumbling shanties and a community striving against odds, stands the Valmiki temple. Within its walls, a transformation unfolds daily, orchestrated by Pehchaan The Street School, an NGO committed to nurturing the potential of underprivileged children.

The temple’s interiors radiate vibrancy with colorful drawings adorning the walls. It’s a beacon of hope, bustling with children of diverse ages ardently engaged in learning and honing their skills.

“Even amid lack of resources, the Valmiki temple remains a hub of joyous learning,” says Akash Tandon, reflecting on the children’s unwavering dedication to their weekend classes despite the city’s challenges.

Every child here has a success story. Take Krish, a school dropout turned budding artist. His sketchbook bursts with pencil drawings of beloved cartoon characters and notable personalities. “I was a dropout but now, because of Pehchaan, I wish to study again I have joined class IX through Open School this year,” shares the determined 14-year-old.

Pehchaan The Street School’s genesis traces back to 2015 when a group of compassionate individuals – Akash Tandon, Kanika Narula, Sam Pillai, Leejo Joy, and Monika Wamdev – formed the organization. Moved by the plight of children either begging on the streets or dropping out of school due to academic struggles, these friends embarked on a mission to provide guidance and support.

Initially faced with skepticism from residents, they began with ten children, aiming not only to educate but also to nurture each child’s potential. Akash shares, “Our objective was holistic – to enable these children to build a career out of their strengths.” As Pehchaan introduced diverse activities like dance, music, art, crafts, and yoga, the initiative gained momentum. Today, it engages over 800 volunteers from city colleges, impacting 1,500+ slum children across ten centers in Delhi.

“We focus on nurturing their passions alongside academics. Our informal setup fosters confidence and communication, leading to visible transformations in behavior,” Kanika Narula remarks, highlighting the NGO’s approach.

Pehchaan The Street School operates solely on crowdfunding, advocating for donations in the form of stationery, school supplies, and time from volunteers. College students join as interns, dedicating three months to teaching at least 24 classes. For children, like Deepak from the inaugural batch now becoming the first boy in the family to attend 12^th class board exams, these volunteers serve as mentors, guiding them towards academic success and promising rewards for excellence.

“In slums, exclusion is a shared experience. By showering attention, we aim to change mindsets,” Akash emphasizes, shedding light on the transformative impact of volunteers’ attention on these marginalized children.
